NEW DELHI: Tensions flared in southeast Delhi’s Govindpuri area late on Monday after an Aam Aadmi Party member allegedly slapped a police officer.
Following this, two ruling party members were booked for assaulting a head constable of Govindpuri Police Station.
As per the police, a gathering was reported at Baba Fateh Singh Marg, following which head constable Kaushal Pal responded to the scene and started videography. AAP members Ashmit and Sagar Mehta allegedly obstructed him and assaulted him.
An FIR (No. 106/25) has been registered at Govindpuri police station under sections 221/132/121(1)/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for obstruction and assault on a public servant.
AAP leader Atishi, in a post on X, accused the police of illegally detaining the two party workers who were allegedly documenting a Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violation. “No action was taken against those violating the MCC. Hope @ECISVEEP ensures free and fair elections in Delhi,” she wrote.
The police have not yet responded to Atishi’s allegations.
