Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, has announced that 2025 will be a landmark year for search innovation. During the company’s recent earnings call, Pichai highlighted the transformative changes that Google Search will undergo, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).
Pichai emphasised that Google Search is evolving into an AI-powered assistant that can handle more complex queries and provide richer, more relevant results. This shift is part of Google’s broader strategy to leverage AI technologies from its research lab, DeepMind, to enhance user experience.
Two key projects, Project Astra and Gemini Deep Research, are at the forefront of this transformation. Project Astra is a multimodal AI system capable of processing live video and answering questions about what it sees in real-time2. Gemini Deep Research, on the other hand, automates the creation of long research reports, expanding the types of queries Google Search can handle.
“And we’ve opened up trusted tester access to a handful of research prototypes, including Project Mariner, which can understand and reason across information on a browser screen to complete tasks, and Project Astra. We expect to bring features from both to the Gemini app later this year,” said Pichai.
The changes to Google Search are expected to have significant implications for both users and businesses. Users will benefit from more intuitive and comprehensive search results, while businesses that rely on Google’s traffic and advertising may need to adapt to the new AI-driven landscape.
Pichai expressed his excitement about the future of search, stating, “As AI continues to expand the universe of queries that people can ask, 2025 is going to be one of the biggest years for search innovation yet”. He believes that these advancements will fundamentally change how people interact with information and the internet.
