Government formation, swearing-in likely once PM back from US – The Times of India

NEW DELHI: After 27 years, BJP drubbed Aam Aadmi Party by winning 48 out of 70 seats in the Delhi assembly election, ushering in an era of the promised “double-engine sarkar” in the capital. However, the process of govt formation and the swearing-in ceremony is expected after February 15, said a party source.
According to party sources, Delhi, being a Union territory, needs approval of the President of India on the chief minister’s name.

Delhi Election Results 2025

“Once the party finalises the name for CM, the President of India, on the advice of the lieutenant governor, will appoint the CM, whose council of ministers is collectively responsible to the assembly. The process will take time (2-3 days),” stated a source.
“Further, the swearing-in ceremony, like in other BJP-ruled states, will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Given that the PM is scheduled to visit the United States on February 12-13 for a crucial meeting with US President Donald Trump, the chances of the swearing-in ceremony are after February 15, unless everything is finalised in the next 1-2 days,” added the source.
As far as the name for the CM is concerned, BJP is likely to pick a surprise candidate, balancing caste, experience, and political strategy. “These election results have proved that BJP’s traditional vote bank-Punjabis, Baniyas, people living in jhuggis, among others-voted for us in large numbers. Winning seven seats in the New Delhi Parliamentary constituency also shows that people expressed faith in us. The party will finalise a name after considering all these factors,” said a party source.
A BJP-led government was last formed in Delhi in 1993-1998.
