After 11 years & 129 hearings, SP MLA fined Rs 100 for Modi remark – The Times of India

SHAMLI: After 129 hearings over 11 years, a special MP-MLA court in Kairana found Samajwadi Party imposed a fine of Rs 100 Samajwadi Party MLA Nahid Hasan for making derogatory remarks against Narendra Modi and Mayawati during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, reports Sachin Sharma. The court said he would have to serve one-month imprisonment if he failed to pay.
Hasan was convicted of making offensive comments about Modi, then Gujarat’s chief minister and a prime ministerial candidate, and BSP chief Mayawati at an event in Shamli’s Azad Chowk on March 28, 2014. Hasan, who was the SP candidate from Kairana at the time, mocked their unmarried status and made remarks referencing the BSP’s election symbol, the elephant. The following day, an FIR was lodged against him at Shamli Kotwali under IPC Section 171(G) (false statement in connection with an election). Police later filed a chargesheet, leading to a prolonged legal battle.
Hasan, now serving his third term as an MLA from Kairana, contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but lost to BJP’s Hukum Singh.
