NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan has filed an anticipatory bail plea before the Rouse Avenue Court in connection with a fresh FIR registered against him, officials said on Thursday. The plea is expected to be heard later in the day.
Seeking protection before joining the investigation, Khan has claimed that the allegations against him are “false and baseless.”
The FIR accuses him of obstructing police officers from arresting a proclaimed offender, a charge he has vehemently denied.
On Wednesday, Khan wrote to Delhi Police commissioner, asserting that the case against him was fabricated and demanding a thorough probe. In his four-page letter, reportedly sent via email, the Okhla MLA-elect alleged that he had been booked without “reasonable grounds or allegations.”
His response comes a day after police sources claimed he was “unreachable.”
The incident
The incident in question took place on February 10 around 3 pm, when a Crime Branch team arrived at Jogabai Extension in Jamia Nagar to arrest Shavez Khan, an accused in a 2018 attempted murder case.
As police interrogated Shavez, Amanatullah Khan allegedly arrived at the scene with 20-25 supporters and confronted the officers.
According to the FIR, Khan and his supporters not only threatened the police but also declared that they “don’t value courts” or law enforcement. The situation reportedly turned aggressive as they allegedly pushed and shoved the officers before helping Shavez escape.
Following the altercation, Khan has remained untraceable, and police teams are actively trying to locate him for questioning. Authorities have intensified efforts to track his movements as legal proceedings continue.
Police team visited AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan’s house
On Monday, a police team visited AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan’s house as part of the ongoing investigation into the case.
Confirming the developments, DCP South East Delhi Ravi Kumar Singh stated that both Amanatullah Khan and Shavez Khan remain untraceable.
“A Crime Branch team had arrived to arrest a proclaimed offender, Shavez Khan. While he was being questioned, Amanatullah Khan, along with his supporters, intervened and facilitated his escape. Since then, Shavez Khan has been absconding,” Singh told ANI.
He added that legal proceedings are underway, and all necessary actions will be taken. Efforts are also being made to contact Amanatullah Khan, but authorities have yet to establish communication with him. The investigation remains ongoing.
