Grieving families gathered at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital to claim their loved ones’ remains. According to hospital sources, all bodies were handed over to their families by 9 am on Sunday. However, reports indicate that many families chose to take the bodies without postmortem examination, though no official confirmation has been provided on this matter.
Delhi Police said that investigations were under way to determine the exact cause of the stampede. Initial findings suggest that overcrowding, delays in train departures, and a sudden platform change announcement contributed to the tragic event.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene where people slipped on the stairs of a footover bridge, leading to a deadly crush. One passenger, searching for his missing son, identified his 12-year-old child’s belongings among those recovered from the station.
A railway staff member who assisted in clearing the aftermath described it as one of the most horrific incidents he had witnessed. “There were shoes, torn bags, half-eaten meals, and even a child’s school bag left behind as people ran for their lives,” he said.
Authorities have announced compensation for the victims’ families. The Railways will provide Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, while those with serious injuries will receive Rs 2.5 lakh. Victims with minor injuries will be compensated with Rs 1 lakh.
Railway officials have launched an inquiry into the incident, led by Narsingh Deo, principal chief commercial manager, northern railway and Pankaj Gangwar, principal chief security commissioner, northern railway. The committee has ordered the securing of CCTV footage from the station to aid in the investigation.
