Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro along with 33 others were on Wednesday formally charged over an alleged coup attempt after his loss in 2022 elections.
“The indictments … describe, in detail, the conspiratorial plot set up and executed against democratic institutions,” that was masterminded by Bolsonaro, a statement from the attorney general’s office said.
Denying the charges, Bolsonaro said, “I have no concerns about the accusations, zero.”
“Have you seen the coup decree, by any chance? You haven’t. Neither have I,” he added.
In November, federal police submitted an 884-page report to attorney general Gonet outlining the scheme. The report alleged a coordinated effort to undermine public trust in the electoral system, draft a decree to legitimize the plot, pressure senior military officials to support it, and incite a riot in the capital.
