MUMBAI: Almost 83% of beneficiaries of the Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana are married women, according to an analysis of around 2.5 crore beneficiaries of the scheme. Unmarried women account for 11.8% of beneficiaries while widows account for 4.7%.
Divorced, destitute and deserted women collectively account for less than 1% of beneficiaries, data shows. Divorced women are 0.3% of total beneficiaries, deserted women 0.2%, and destitute women 0.1% of the total.
The 30-39 year age group had highest number of beneficiaries at 29% of the total. The 21-29 year group followed next with 25.5% while the 40-49 year group accounted for 23.6% of the beneficiaries. Indeed, 78% of beneficiaries fell between the 21-39 year age group and 22% fell in the 50-65 year group. The 60-65 year age group accounted for almost 5% of beneficiaries.
“Almost 5% of women aged 60-65 years have received the benefit indicating that women who were not receiving any benefit have received much-needed financial support,” said women and child welfare secretary Anup Kumar Yadav.
Pune district topped in applications for the scheme followed by Nashik and Ahmednagar. In the Konkan region, Sindhudurg had the lowest number; in Vidarbha region it was Gadchiroli which had the least applications.
The scheme provides a stipend of Rs 1,500 per month to married, divorced, widowed, deserted and destitute women between ages of 21 and 65 years, whose annual family income is below Rs 2.5 lakh and who are domiciled in the state. One eligible unmarried woman from each family can also be considered.
The Mahayuti alliance had promised to raise the stipend to Rs 2,100 once it came to power and is under pressure to announce it in the state budget which will be tabled next month.
Beneficiaries are currently being scrutinised to remove those who are ineligible for the scheme which costs a staggering Rs 46,000 crore annually. So far, 5 lakh beneficiaries have been dropped. The number could go up to 15 lakh, according to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The govt is in the process of scrutinising Ladki Bahin beneficiaries on the basis of five key criteria. Those with four-wheelers and govt jobs will be debarred. Also, those getting a benefit of above Rs 1,500 from other govt schemes will be ineligible.
