Lucknow: The Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) 2024 in Lucknow on Saturday (February 22) was a grand celebration of India’s sporting excellence.
The event honoured athletes, coaches, and sports administrators for their remarkable contributions to the country’s sporting landscape. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath graced the occasion, expressing his admiration for the icons who continue to inspire generations.
“At The Times of India Sports Awards, we are honoured to have esteemed sports personalities among us today,” he said. “Present here is the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), legendary athlete PT Usha, former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev, Paralympic champion Deepa Malik, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey, Commonwealth Games medallist shooter Jaspal Rana, along with Saina Nehwal, Gagan Narang, Vijender Singh, Anju Bobby George, Mary Kom, and many other distinguished athletes who have inspired the nation’s youth.”
The highlight of the evening was the recognition of India’s rising stars. D Gukesh, the chess prodigy who became the youngest-ever World Chess Champion, was honoured as Sportsperson of the Year (Male). Manu Bhaker, who won two medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was awarded Sportsperson of the Year (Female). Uttar Pradesh’s Sports Secretary and Suhas L.Y. were also recognised for their contributions to the development of sports in the state.
Yogi Adityanath emphasised the growing sports culture in India and the transformation seen in recent years. “Over the last decade, India has witnessed a significant transformation in sports culture. It is now seen as a viable career path, and society has begun to recognise the importance of sports infrastructure,” he said.
The Chief Minister highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s efforts in promoting sports, ensuring that every village has a playground and an open gym. “So far, we have established 85,000 Youth and Women Welfare Centers and provided them with sports kits. We are also committed to building mini stadiums in every district and a sports university in Meerut to provide world-class training facilities,” he added.
Expressing his gratitude to The Times of India Group for organising the event, he reaffirmed his government’s dedication to sports. “Unlike before, financial resources are no longer a constraint — our focus is solely on preparing athletes for success,” he assured.
The ceremony concluded with a powerful message of encouragement, as CM Yogi Adityanath extended his best wishes to all athletes. “Once again, I congratulate all the honoured athletes and extend my heartfelt greetings on Maha Shivratri. Jai Hind!”
