NASA to launch lunar lander ‘Athena’ with SpaceX Falcon 9 on February 26; know when and where to watch the historic mission | – The Times of India


NASA is going to embark on a thrilling mission to the Moon on February 26, 2025. NASA is launching its Nova-C lander, or Athena, into space on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The spacecraft will take off from the Kennedy Space Center, Launch Complex 39A, in Florida. This is one of the larger NASA missions, the Artemis mission and the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS), which are working to establish the groundwork for long-term exploration of the moon and beyond.

NASA’s CLPS program, which is a partnership with commercial industry, is dedicated to transporting payloads to the lunar surface. The Athena mission is one of the most important elements of this program, transporting important scientific experiments and technology demonstrations. NASA to send lunar lander: When and where to watch the launch

NASA Intuitive Machines IM-2 mission will be broadcast live online to watch. Space enthusiasts can join the fun on NASA+. Pre-launch activities start on Feb. 25, and the launch window will be later. NASA’s website has been booked for live coverage to start around 45 minutes before liftoff.
For those prepared to view the launch, it will also be available live on NASA’s website (NASA Live).

Athena lunar lander mission timeline

Intuitive Machines’ lunar lander will travel around a week to the Moon after launch. Thursday, March 6, 2025, is projected as the landing date but may be rescheduled depending on mission conditions. The Athena lander will perform a series of key activities like technology demonstrations and science experiments on lunar surface landing that will inform future missions to the Moon.

NASA SpaceX mission to Moon: Key mission goals

Among the biggest attractions of this mission is to showcase the use of resources on the Moon. Athena will be carrying along such devices as a drill and mass spectrometer to search for and quantify the presence of volatiles or gases within the regolith of the Moon. This type of search will be carried out in Mons Mouton, a plateau area near the Moon’s South Pole, of specific interest because of the likely deposits of water ice.
Such laboratory results would be a principal element of information to be used for future human and non-human lunar surface missions. Resource utilization by NASA is the central focus in its long-term strategic plan on sustaining human presence on the Moon and, in doing so, it is needed in order to pursue future Moon-to-Mars missions.
