Trevor Zegras has been suspended for three games
Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras has been suspended for three games for interference after a play against Detroit Red Wings forward Michael Rasmussen. The suspension was a result of a play in the second period of Sunday’s game, where Zegras struck Rasmussen in the head after releasing the puck while attempting a pass off the glass.
Even though Rasmussen had already made the pass, Zegras dropped a hard, high hit on his head. The NHL’s Department of Player Safety decided to suspend Zegras, with the decision being announced on Monday.
No interference penalty was assessed during the game, but following the hit, Rasmussen dropped and exited the ice with an upper-body injury. He did not return to the contest and did not accompany the Red Wings to their next game against Minnesota on Tuesday. Detroit coach Todd McLellan said Rasmussen is day-to-day.
In its decision, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety described that Zegras made the hit outside the legal window for a check, the late, high hitting resulting in large impact with Rasmussen’s head. The impact of the hit resulted in the three-game suspension.
He was drafted by the Ducks, ninth overall, in the 2019 NHL entry draft and played college ice hockey at Boston University. Zegras developed in New York and played bantam major ice hockey with the Mid Fairfield Rangers prior to joining the Avon Old Farms school’s Winged Beavers in the Founders League.
In the 2016-2017 season with Avon Old Farms, he had 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points. As a sophomore, Zegras tried out for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and made the team.
