Over 300 pro football hopefuls are attending the NFL combine in Indianapolis to improve their 2025 draft stock. One way to stand out is by posting a head-turning time in the 40-yard dash, which is responsible for pushing some players from Day 2 picks into the first round.
40 times are often used as benchmark numbers to separate top running backs, wide receivers, and defensive backs from the middle of the pack. A bad 40 time can negatively impact how teams view certain quarterbacks, as seen with Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ disappointing performance in 2018.
Last year, Mahomes requested that NFL Network’s combine broadcasts not use video footage of his 40-minute stint before the combine. “As the combine starts this week! All I ask is that NFL Network doesn’t use my 40 overlay anymore.”

Former Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, ranked 28th overall by the Chiefs last year, is now Mahomes’ teammate after running the 40 at the combine in a record 4.21 seconds. This makes Mahomes’ performance even more impressive.
