NEW DELHI: BJP MLA Neelam Pahalwan on Thursday proposed renaming Najafgarh to “Nahargarh” in the Delhi Assembly, citing historical references to Raja Nahar Singh’s role in the 1857 revolt and his efforts to bring the region under Delhi’s territory.
“During the 1857 revolt, Raja Nahar Singh fought and included Najafgarh in Delhi’s territory. Despite several efforts, including those by then MP Parvesh Verma, we tried to rename Najafgarh to ‘Nahargarh’,” Pahalwan said in the Assembly.
During the session, multiple BJP MLAs raised pressing concerns affecting their constituencies.
BJP MLA Anil Sharma from RK Puram highlighted severe water and sewerage problems, stating, “Wherever I go in my constituency, water and sewerage issues dominate. Several villages face an alarming situation where sewage flows continuously.”
Mohan Singh Bisht, BJP MLA from Mustafabad, raised concerns about the water shortage in his constituency. “Despite having a water treatment plant, residents do not receive drinking water. Earlier, pure Ganga water was supplied, but now the situation has deteriorated,” he said, urging the Water Minister to take action.
Om Prakash Sharma, BJP MLA from Vishwas Nagar, alleged financial irregularities in the installation of CCTV cameras across Delhi. “In the first phase, fewer cameras were installed than planned, yet full payment was made. This is a major scam,” he claimed, demanding a thorough investigation.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs staged a protest outside the Delhi Assembly after being denied entry following their three-day suspension. Leader of Opposition Atishi accused the BJP of “crossing all limits of dictatorship” by barring them from the Assembly premises.
“This is unconstitutional and undemocratic. Even in Parliament, suspended members can protest, but here we are being blocked,” Atishi told media.
AAP MLAs were suspended on Tuesday after raising slogans against the alleged removal of portraits of B R Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh from the chief minister’s office. Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta extended their suspension, stating that their conduct had disrupted proceedings.
BJP MLA Mohan Singh Bisht criticized AAP’s actions, saying, “Their attitude is wrong. If the Lieutenant Governor is speaking, they should listen. They must learn Assembly decorum.”
BJP MLA Satish Upadhyay accused AAP of corruption, citing a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report. “The report exposes how AAP benefitted close associates and caused a revenue loss of over Rs 2,000 crore. Today, we will expose Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet’s real face,” he said.
AAP countered, with Atishi alleging that the BJP was trying to erase Ambedkar’s legacy. “They removed Babasaheb Ambedkar’s portrait. Do they think Prime Minister Narendra Modi can replace him?” she questioned.
