Bangladesh received no “official response” from India regarding the requests made for the former PM Sheikh Hasina‘s extradition, claimed interim government chief Mohammed Yunus.
Speaking to Sky News, Yunus claimed that the south Asian country had sent “formal letters” but received “no official response” from New Delhi. He further said that the former PM would face the courts, whether in person or otherwise.
He also said that a trial awaited Hasina for conducting crimes against humanity before she fled the country last year.
“A trial will be taking place. Not only her, but also all the people who are associated with her – her family members, her clients or associates,” he said.
India, last year, had confirmed that it had received note from Bangladesh requesting Hasina’s extradition.
“We confirm that we have received a Note Verbale from the Bangladesh High Commission today in connection with an extradition request. At this time, we have no comment to offer on this matter,” the ministry of external affairs spokesperson said.
Hasina faces accusations of deploying security forces and police to abduct, torture, and kill hundreds of activists. However, she denies the allegations, claiming she is a victim of political persecution.
