A Newark police officer was killed, and another was injured in a shooting on Friday evening, officials said. A 14-year-old suspect was also killed in the exchange of gunfire near Broadway and Carteret Street around 6.37 pm, CBS reported.
As per local media, the suspect fired around 29 shots before officers returned fire. The fallen officer was 25 years old, while the condition of the injured officer remains unknown.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy called it a “rapidly developing situation” and urged people to pray for the officers. Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin said the shooting was a tragic reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily.
The area remained blocked off for hours as authorities continued their investigation, which officials described as “active and ongoing.”
