In Hinduism, there are two main Navratris that are celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy by Goddess Durga devotees across the world, namely- Chaitra Navratri and Shardiya Navratri. The word Navratri is made up of two Hindi words– Nav meaning nine, and Ratri meaning nights. And so, Navratri is a nine-day Hindu festival which is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her nine divine forms; one for each day of the festival.
As the name suggests, the Chaitra Navratri is celebrated in the Hindu month of Chaitra, which usually falls in March or April months of the Gregorian calendar. Chaitra Navratri marks the beginning of a new year, as per the Hindu lunar calendar. And so, the festival holds great spiritual significance, symbolising the victory of good over evil and the power of devotion.
During the nine days of Navratri, devotees of Maa Durga observe fasts, and eat only Satvik food. They also refrain from consuming garlic, onion, table salt, and alcohol. Since these nine days of Navratri are considered auspicious, devotees prayer to Goddess Durga and seek her blessings for prosperity and well-being. Each day of the Navratri is dedicated to a different form of Goddess Durga, namely: Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri, and each form represents a unique virtue. Devotees also visit temples, chant mantras, and read the Durga Saptashati to invoke the goddess’s divine energy. Chaitra Navratri ends on the ninth day with Ram Navami, the birth anniversary of Lord Rama.
