A 5.0-magnitude earthquake rattled northeastern Taiwan early Wednesday, shaking buildings in the capital Taipei, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The tremor, which struck at a depth of nearly 70 kilometres in Yilan County, did not cause any immediate reports of damage or injuries, local fire authorities confirmed to AFP.
Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates along the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it one of the world’s most earthquake-prone regions.
Wednesday’s quake comes almost a year after a deadly 7.4-magnitude earthquake in April 2024 — the island’s strongest in 25 years — left at least 17 people dead, caused landslides and extensive structural damage around Hualien.
