Rumours also suggest that the upcoming iPhone models will be out for pre-order soon after the launch and may become available for sale by September 20. However, the Apple Intelligence-based AI features may not become available at the launch. Here are all the changes that are expected to arrive for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus: Expected design changes
The iPhone’s design has remained relatively unchanged since the iPhone 11, with the Dynamic Island being the most notable addition. While the overall look of the iPhone 16 series will be similar, leaked images suggest some minor tweaks. The rectangular camera module is expected to be slightly narrower and may align the two cameras vertically. Additionally, the LED flash may be relocated from the camera module to the back of the device.
Pictures of the alleged dummy iPhone 16 models have also leaked online which suggest that Apple may add a new white colour to the base lineup. The leaked images also indicate that iPhone 16 models may be more saturated than the Pro models, which usually get the lightest of hues.
The iPhone 16 series is also rumoured to feature new side buttons — tentatively named Action and Capture buttons. The Action button will allow users to customise actions, while the Capture button will work as a camera shutter. However, the Alert Slider may be removed from the iPhone 16 series.
The Capture button is expected to be a capacitive trackpad rather than a physical button that may enable swipe gestures for functions like zooming.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus: Expected display changes
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are expected to have slightly smaller display dimensions than their Pro counterparts due to thinner bezels. Meanwhile, all four models will feature the Dynamic Island display notch.
However, both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will have a 60Hz refresh rate, unlike the Pro models. There is a possibility that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus may adopt a higher refresh rate in 2025.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus: Other expected specs
Apple may use A18 chipsets for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models to offer Apple Intelligence capabilities for these models. However, due to hardware limitations, it will not be available on last year’s iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models
The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will also feature a powerful NPU and increased RAM to support AI processing and large AI models. While the exact RAM capacity remains uncertain, it is expected to be at least 8GB, with the possibility of increasing to 12GB in the future.
With a 48MP main camera and an upgraded ultra-wide camera with autofocus and a wider aperture, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will have the same dual camera setup as their predecessors.. Other expected features include JPEG XL support and a new Capture button.
