NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court granted bail to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday in excise policy case, leading to celebrations among Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members and supporters.
Sunita Kejriwal, Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, expressed her gratitude on social media, congratulating the AAP supporters and hoping for the release of other incarcerated AAP leaders. “Congratulations to AAP family! Kudos for staying strong.Wishing also the soonest release of our other leaders,” she posted.
AAP MP Raghav Chadha welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision, saying it validated Kejriwal’s “brand of honest politics,” and suggesting his imprisonment was politically motivated.
“I thank the Supreme Court… He (Arvind Kejriwal) is not just a name, but a brand of honest politics. He had to go to jail for 6 months because of his increasing popularity,” Chadha said.
He further added that the AAP is poised for renewed strength ahead of the upcoming Haryana elections, with Kejriwal now expected to lead the campaign.
Former Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia framed the court ruling as a victory for truth. He accused the BJP of targeting Kejriwal to hinder his work for the public good. “Once again, the truth has won in the fight against lies and conspiracies,” Sisodia said. “An honest man who was working to improve the lives of people was jailed. There is no greater sin than this in the history of democracy.”
Sisodia further attacked the CBI and ED, calling them “caged parrots” under the control of the BJP-led central government. He emphasised that the Supreme Court’s ruling was a clear message to the ruling party to cease its “dictatorial regime.”
AAP leader Sanjay Singh attacked the BJP, alleging the Modi government used investigative agencies to falsely accuse Kejriwal. “We have been saying from day one that this whole matter is based on false facts… The Modi government, the dictatorial regime, used ED and CBI to present false facts,” Singh stated.
Delhi ministers Atishi and Gopal Rai also praised the judgement. Atishi posted on social media, “Satyamev Jayate. Truth can be troubled, not defeated.” She added that despite two years of investigations, no proof of wrongdoing was found against AAP leaders.
“Despite all their efforts over the last two years, the ED and CBI could not recover a penny in this alleged scam… The SC asked CBI to be above board, unbiased, and neutral,” Atishi said.
Gopal Rai called the event a “big victory for our party and a loss for dictatorship”.
Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21, 2024, as part of a money laundering investigation into the 2021-22 Delhi excise policy, which has since been scrapped. The CBI arrested him on June 26, 2024, while he was still in ED custody, in connection with the same excise case.
