RAJAHMUNDRY: In a heartrending incident in Kakinada district, an old woman and her daughter ended their lives due to their profound emotional attachment.
Akasam Saraswathi (60) and her daughter Swati (28) had been residing in Kakinada for 12 years. Saraswathi was grappling with severe health ailments for a considerable period, while Swati, who shared a close bond with her mother, remained deeply concerned, police said.
Locals found Saraswathi’s body on the bed, while Swati was found hanging from the ceiling fan.
Hailing from Yenugula Palli in P Gannavaram mandal of Konaseema district, the woman and her daughter had made Kakinada their hometown.
Swati, who worked as a tailor, remained unmarried owing to her devotion towards her ailing mother, who suffered from both physical and psychological conditions. Her perpetual worry about her mother’s wellbeing and future care influenced her decision to remain single.
Despite hospitalising her mother at Kakinada GGH for nearly a month, there was no improvement in her condition.
One Town police inspector Naga Durga Rao said both women took their lives by hanging.
He suggested that Saraswathi’s body likely fell onto the bed due to her weight. Police believe the incident occurred on Saturday, though it was discovered on Tuesday evening when neighbours reported a foul odour emanating from the premises.
The bodies have been shifted to Kakinada GGH for post-mortem examination. Kakinada One Town police have registered a case and launched investigation.
