RAIPUR: A 34-year-old RPF jawan died after his service rifle went off inside a train at Raipur station on Saturday, reports Partha Behera. A passenger was also injured in the accident. Two bullets were fired from constable Dinesh Chandra’s AR-M1 rifle, police said. The first hit him in the abdomen and got lodged there, ripping into his internal organs. The second bullet, strangely, hit him at almost the exact spot, exited, and hit a passenger sleeping in an upper berth.
Chandra, from Rajasthan, succumbed during treatment. Injured passenger Mohammad Danish was operated upon and is stable, said officials.
The mysterious shooting took place on Sarnath Express. A five-man RPF squad was to escort the train from Bilaspur to Raipur (125km away), SECR PRO Saket Ranjan said. “While disembarking at Raipur, the constable’s gun went off by accident. An investigation in the incident is underway,” he said.
