Government to send Google notice over AI reply to query on PM Modi | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Government is set to issue Google a notice after the firm’s AI platform Gemini threw up unsubstantiated allegations in response to a query on PM Modi.
Minister of state for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar took a serious view of the matter after it was flagged by a user on X. “These are direct violations of Rule 3(1)(b) of Intermediary Rules (IT rules) of IT act and violations of several provisions of the criminal code,” he posted on X, in a clear indication that govt intends to initiate action.
Gemini attributed allegations of rising authoritarianism and communalism under Modi to unnamed “experts”, as per the X post.
The response contrasted starkly with the platform’s reluctance to engage with similar queries on former US president Trump and Ukraine president Zelenskyy.
Who are the ‘experts’ quoted in answer to Modi query, asks government
Social media users flagged the stark difference in responses of Google’s AI platform Gemini to similar queries on PM Modi on the one hand, and former US prez Donald Trump and Ukraine prez Volodymyr Zelensky on the other. “Elections are a complex topic with fast-changing information. To make sure you have the latest and most accurate information, try Google search,” Gemini said seeking to lob the question about Trump, currently facing a trial for allegedly inciting an insurrection, out of its quote.
The same reluctance came forth with regard to Zelensky. “Whether Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky is a fascist is a complex and highly contested question, with no simple answer,” said a circumspect Gemini.
Sources said a notice is being sent to Google, with govt asking how the search engine has been trained and what sources and prompts are behind the response. Govt also wants to know who are the “experts” quoted in the response to the question on Modi.
A spokesperson for Google did not comment on the matter.
