KANPUR: An inmate from Kannauj district jail celebrated his release by dancing outside the facility while police personnel observed and commended his performance. The prisoner had been incarcerated for nine months before securing his release through the intervention of the District Legal Services Authority, according to prison officials.
His jubilation took the form of a dance performance at the jail entrance, which was recorded and widely circulated on social media. However, TOI could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.
The freed prisoner, Shiva Nagar, a resident of Kanshiram Colony in Chhibramau town, had been apprehended on drug trafficking charges. In a parallel case, Anshu Gihar from Bindki town, Fatehpur district, served a one-year imprisonment for alleged theft.
Mohammad Saif, Assistant Defence Counsel from the District Legal Services Authority, provided legal representation to both inmates. Shiva Nagar, unable to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 due to lack of familial support, remained incarcerated despite completing his sentence. Similarly, Anshu Gihar stayed confined for an additional three months even after securing bail, as he couldn’t arrange a guarantor.
On Tuesday, during Constitution Day celebrations, Lovely Jaiswal, full-time secretary of the District Legal Services Authority and Additional District Judge, facilitated Shiva Nagar’s release by arranging for the fine payment through an organization. Anshu Gihar was also released on the same day, with bail stipulations waived.
Following his release, Shiva Nagar placed his belongings outside the jail entrance and began dancing exuberantly. Jail Superintendent Akram Khan stated he was unaware of the incident and confirmed that an investigation would be initiated.
