CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu govt has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet districts on Saturday due to Cyclone Fengal.
It advised educational institutions not to conduct any special classes since there is a forecast of heavy rain and winds.
District collectors in other areas under heavy rainfall alerts, including Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Mayiladuthurai, have been advised to decide on closures based on local conditions.
IT companies are urged to implement work-from-home arrangements on Nov 30. This measure aims to reduce travel risks as heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected to disrupt normal operations.
Additionally, public transport on the East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) will be suspended from the afternoon of Nov 30 as the cyclone is expected to make landfall with wind speeds ranging from 60 to 90 km/h. Commuters are advised to plan their travel accordingly.
The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority has urged the public to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel during the cyclone. Beaches, amusement parks, and recreational activities should be strictly avoided, according to an official release.
The Institute of Distance Education at University of Madras has postponed undergraduate examinations, scheduled to be held on Nov 30, to Dec 14.
