RAIPUR: A 35-year-old woman and her seven-year-old daughter were found hanging from a tree behind a govt school in in Kunni village in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district, where her husband worked as a teacher.
The couple was going through divorce proceedings. Police suspect Meena Gupta hanged her daughter Astha and then died by suicide, but they aren’t sure what triggered the tragedy.
In initial investigation, police have found that Meena and her husband Sanjay Gupta had heated arguments over the past few days. On Thursday, Meena and her daughter were found hanging, barely 50 metres from the school where her husband teaches. Their bodies were taken down in front of police and district officials. Police say Sanjay was on her way home from school at the time. Police are recording statements of Sanjay and the couple’s relatives.
Sanjay and Meena married in 2017 and their daughter was born in 2018. The child was around two years old when the couple filed for divorce in family court. Meena has also filed a dowry case against him and her in-laws.
