Nitin Gadkari’s big vision for no petrol, diesel vehicles in India! Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that he aims to transition India into a green economy by reducing GST on hybrid vehicles and ridding the country of 36 crore petrol and diesel vehicles.
When asked whether it is possible for India to get rid of petrol and diesel cars altogether, Nitin Gadkari told PTI, “It is difficult but not impossible. This is my vision.” He highlighted that India’s massive expenditure of Rs 16 lakh crore on fuel imports could be redirected towards benefiting farmers, boosting rural areas, and creating employment opportunities for the youth.
While the timeline for this ambitious goal remains unspecified, Gadkari’s proposal to lower GST on hybrid vehicles to 5% and 12% for flex engines is under consideration by the Finance ministry. Emphasizing the potential of biofuels, Gadkari believes that fuel imports can be completely done away with through the promotion of biofuels. Environmental activists have lauded Gadkari’s green mobility vision but cautioned against the continued use of fossil fuels in electricity production.
