NEW DELHI: BJP MP Sambit Patra on Monday cited a research report by Jawaharlal Nehru University, claiming that illegal migration from Bangladesh and Myanmar has led to a significant rise in Delhi’s Muslim population.
He alleged that “political patronage”, particularly from the Aam Aadmi Party, has enabled this influx.
Referring to the 114-page JNU report titled ‘Illegal Migrants to Delhi: Analysing Socio-Economic and Political Consequences’, Patra, during a press conference, stated, “The report highlights a notable increase in the Muslim population due to illegal migration from Bangladesh and Myanmar. It mentions a demographic shift in the city and discusses its socio-political impact.”

“According to the report, political patronage plays a key role in facilitating a steady influx of undocumented Rohingyas and Bangladeshis. AAP has a crucial role in this,” BJP MP added.
“These migrants are taking over low-paying jobs, particularly in construction, which otherwise would have gone to workers from Indian states,” he said.
He further alleged that political parties are assisting illegal migrants in securing fake voter registrations, posing a threat to democracy and the electoral process.
Patra’s remarks come on the final day of campaigning, with Delhi set to vote on February 5 and counting scheduled for February 8.
