NEW DELHI: Haryana minister Anil Vij said on Thursday that US President Donald Trump is not wrong in his decision to deport illegal immigrants from the US, adding that every country has the right to expel those who enter it illegally.
Vij’s remark came after 104 illegal Indian immigrants were deported in a US military aircraft that landed at Amritsar airport on Wednesday. This was the first batch of Indians deported by the US government.
Many of the deportees, who had undertaken dangerous journeys across many nations to get to the United States, were handcuffed and shackled during the 12-hour trip from Texas to Amritsar.
The US is moving to deport thousands of illegal immigrants after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on his first day in the White House.
On Punjab’s NRI affairs minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal urging PM Modi to discuss deportation with the US president, Vij stated: “If a person goes to another country illegally, then that nation has every right to expel them. And Trump did not make any mistake.”
“I say take a cue from it. Lakhs of people are illegal in this country… They were born somewhere else, but we feed them. They should be sent back to their respective countries,” he added.
Of the first batch of deportees who arrived on Wednesday- 33 were from Haryana and Gujarat each, 30 from Punjab, three each from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and two from Chandigarh.
Punjab minister Dhaliwal on Wednesday, also pleaded with PM Modi to speak to his “friend” President Trump over the deportation of Indians.
