Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group, has expressed confidence in his company’s ability to compete with Tesla should the Elon Musk-owned company enter the Indian market. Reports suggested that the American electric vehicle (EV) maker has selected locations for two showrooms in New Delhi and Mumbai, moving closer to its delayed plans to sell its cars in the country.
Mahindra’s remarks came in response to a query on social media platform X regarding the potential competition.
“How will you handle the competition, if dear @elonmusk brings his @Tesla to India ? Are you ready Sir ? @TataMotors_Cars,” Mahindra was asked.

Drawing a parallel to India’s economic liberalisation in 1991, Mahindra recalled the influx of foreign automakers like Daewoo, Ford, General Motors and Hyundai. He noted that while these companies brought new technologies and designs, Mahindra successfully navigated that competitive landscape.
“We have been asked similar questions ever since the opening up of the Indian economy in 1991. How will you compete against Tata, Maruti, and all MNCs? But we’re still around,” Mahindra stated.
He further emphasised the company’s commitment to long-term growth and relevance.
“And working like maniacs to still be around & relevant even a century from now. With you cheering us on, we will make that happen,” he added.
In a separate post, Mahindra shared a screenshot of an older post regarding Tesla’s entry in India.
“Yes, Naresh. And even fewer remember my post of 2018 when he was going through a challenging period.,” he said.
Mahindra recently launched its XUV400 and the all electric XUV.e8, indicating its continued investment and focus on the EV segment.
Tesla has shown interest in the Indian market, recently posting job openings for several positions, including Tesla Advisor, Inside Sales Advisor, and Consumer Engagement Manager. This move follows a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
