Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 series later this year. Rumours surrounding the iPhone 17 models set for 2025 have already begun to circulate while the Cupertino-based recently expanded last year’s iPhone 16 family with a new smartphone. 2025 is speculated to mark one of the most significant design updates to the iPhone since the 2017 iPhone X. Apple is expected to introduce an all-new iPhone 17 “Air” with a much slimmer design, a new display size, a redesigned camera, and other noteworthy changes. Here are some of the details about the iPhone 17 series that have already been leaked:
iPhone 17 series: Expected price and launch date
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be more budget-friendly than the iPhone 17 Pro models, with the Pro lineup starting at $999. The upcoming iPhone 17 series is expected for a September 2025 release, which is when Apple launches iPhones traditionally.
iPhone 17 series: What more to expect
Apple is expected to launch four iPhone 17 models in 2025—the standard iPhone 17, the new iPhone 17 Air, and the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max—while the “Plus” variant may be phased out.
The iPhone 17 Air is expected to be a sleek, thinner option with a display around 6.6 inches and a chassis possibly under 6mm thick, positioning it as a mid-range alternative akin to the MacBook Air or iPad Air.
All iPhone 17 models will reportedly feature LTPO OLED panels with ProMotion 120Hz refresh rates and always-on display capabilities, marking a shift where this technology is no longer limited to the Pro lineup.
Design upgrades may include a new anti-reflective, scratch-resistant display material, and for the Pro models, a potential shift to a half-aluminum, half-glass back with a reimagined camera bump—possibly adopting a horizontal or rectangular layout.
Camera enhancements are also rumoured, with a 24MP front camera with a six-element lens and, in the case of the Pro Max, an upgraded 48MP telephoto sensor, while the standard iPhone 17 may retain its Wide and Ultra Wide setups and the iPhone 17 Air may feature a single 48MP rear camera.
Under the hood, the series may come powered by the new A19 chipset—with the Pro models sporting an A19 Pro—coupled with RAM upgrades to 8GB or 12GB, and connectivity improvements such as an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip and possibly even an in-house modem for the iPhone 17 Air.
Additionally, battery technology may also see improvements with an easier-to-remove adhesive design. Overall, the iPhone 17 series is expected to deliver significant design and performance updates, continuing Apple’s tradition of annual innovation.
