Row erupts as NIT-Calicut appoints professor, who praised Godse, department dean – The Times of India

NEW DELHI: NIT-Calicut professor Shaija A who was charged with praising Nathuram Godse on Mahatma Gandhi‘s Martyr’s Day last year has been appointed as the dean of the planning and development department with effect on March 7.
The move has triggered opposition from Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the CPI(M), which has announced a protest march to NIT.
Shaija was arrested and granted bail in February last year after organizations like DYFI, SFI, and the Youth Congress filed complaints over her social media post praising Godse, which was in response to a post shared by a right-wing advocate.
She had allegedly said in her comment that she felt “proud” of Godse for assassinating Mahatma Gandhi, claiming it “saved India.”
She was questioned by Kunnamangalam police at her residence in Chathamangalam after a case was registered against her under Section 153 of the IPC for wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riots. The Kunnamangalam court later granted her anticipatory bail.
