NEW DELHI: Union home minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting on Delhi’s security and law enforcement, directing strict measures against illegal intrusions, expediting 2020 Delhi riots cases, and strengthening policing in the national capital.
The meeting was attended by Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi home minister Ashish Sood, and Delhi police commissioner. Shah emphasised that the “double engine government” in Delhi would work at “double speed” to ensure safety and development, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.
Key directives from the meeting:
- No Delhi Police permission for construction: To streamline urban development, Shah directed that construction-related approvals in Delhi will no longer require Delhi Police’s permission.
- Fast-track trials for 2020 riots cases: The Delhi government was instructed to appoint special prosecutors to ensure the swift disposal of cases related to the 2020 Delhi riots.
- Action against
illegal intruders : Shah stressed the need for strict identification and deportation of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants, warning that they pose a threat to national security. - Crackdown on support networks: The home minister called for stringent action against networks facilitating illegal immigration, including those involved in document forgery and housing arrangements for foreign nationals.
- Police accountability: Shah instructed that poorly performing police stations be dealt with firmly and that DCP-level officers should conduct public hearings to resolve citizens’ concerns.
- Interstate gang elimination: The Delhi Police was directed to adopt a ruthless approach against criminal gangs operating across state borders.
- Narcotics crackdown: Authorities were urged to implement a top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top approach to dismantle narcotics networks.
- Boosting police strength: Delhi Police was asked to initiate recruitment for additional posts to enhance law enforcement capacity.
- Women & child safety in JJ Clusters: New security committees will be set up in JJ (Jhuggi-Jhopri) clusters to protect vulnerable groups.
- Traffic & water-logging issues: The Delhi Police Commissioner and Chief Secretary will jointly address daily traffic congestion hotspots, while the Delhi government was instructed to prepare a ‘Monsoon Action Plan’ to tackle water-logging during heavy rains.
