Union Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has called on major Indian tech companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro to take on the challenge of developing a mobile operating system tailored for India. Speaking at the 32nd ICT Business Awards & DQ Digital Leadership Conclave, organized by Dataquest India, he said, “From this platform, I urge our leading tech companies — Infosys, TCS, and Wipro—to accept this challenge: create a mobile operating system for our nation.”
According to a report by news agency ANI, the minister encouraged these companies to shift their focus, he added, “You’ve excelled in providing services, but now is the time for India to become a product-driven nation. The government stands ready to support you in this endeavor.”
During his address, Vaishnaw emphasized the government’s vision to position India as a global technology leader. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inspired us with the confidence, vision, and resources to think big,” he said. “We must not only address today’s challenges but also build foundations for the future—developing technologies and products that place India among the top five technology nations, perhaps one day spoken of alongside the G7 or G20 as part of a ‘T5’—the top five in technology.”
Outlined government’s technology roadmap
The minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to democratize artificial intelligence (AI) and lead in this domain. He revealed that five manufacturing units are under construction, with the first “Made in India” chip expected to launch this year. Additionally, he announced the introduction of the AI Compute Portal, which will provide researchers, startups, and government bodies access to advanced GPUs and high-performance computing resources for AI development.
“Yesterday, we launched a shared compute facility with 14,000 GPUs,” he said. “This will empower our researchers, students, and startups to test AI models, refine algorithms, and build world-class applications. Our vision is clear: within the next 12 months, we aim to develop our own foundational AI models.”
Responding to a question from ANI, Vaishnaw outlined the government’s technology roadmap to achieve its 2047 goals. He explained that the third term of the government will prioritize creating independent AI models. Other objectives include developing small, problem-specific AI models, designing graphics processing units (GPUs), supporting startups, and nurturing talent.
