NEW DELHI: India has shifted its consulate staff from Sittwe in Myanmar to Yangon due to security concerns in the region, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) informed on Friday.
Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India is closely monitoring the situation. “We are closely monitoring the security situation in Myanmar, particularly in the Rakhine State.Necessary steps have been taken to ensure the safety of our citizens,” he said at his weekly media briefing.

“We have temporarily relocated our staff at CGI (Consulate General of India) Sittwe to Yangon. Our Consulate in Mandalay remains fully functional,” Jaiswal said.
Myanmar’s military-run government has been battling armed rebel groups on several fronts and has suffered a string of defeats in frontier areas. Myanmar’s military, which took power in a 2021 coup after deposing an elected civilian government, has faced a series of setbacks against a loose alliance of ethnic rebel groups and a civilian militia movement.
At least 2,000 people have been displaced within Myanmar by the latest round of fighting between the rebels and the military, according to civil society group Karen Peace Support Network.
