NEW DELHI: A video circulating on social media shows a visibly dejected MS Dhoni walking off the field without shaking hands with the players of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who were busy celebrating their win, after Chennai Super Kings faced a heartbreaking exit from IPL 2024.
Following a dramatic last-over finish where CSK needed 11 runs from the final five balls to advance to the knockouts, RCB players celebrated wildly in front of their home crowd. They were awestruck by their own survival and qualification for the playoffs as the last team.

However, Dhoni managed to pick himself up from the dugout, walked over the boundary ropes, and stood waiting to congratulate the RCB players. However, after a brief wait, he walked off, shook hands with the RCB support staff, and disappeared into the CSK dressing room.
Expressing his dissatisfaction over Dhoni being kept waiting, cricket commentator and expert Harsha Bhogle told Cricbuzz, “Even if you lose the World Cup final, you shake hands with the opposition. It symbolizes that our antagonism is over; we didn’t give an inch to each other, but now that the game is over, we shake hands.”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan added, “If that was MS Dhoni’s last game, the RCB players should have shown more awareness. Instead of celebrating immediately, they should have waited to shake the legend’s hand. You shake hands first and then celebrate. I wouldn’t want to wake up as an RCB player tomorrow thinking we missed the chance to show respect to MS Dhoni if he announces his retirement.”
RCB’s fairytale revival continued with a 27-run victory at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, marking their sixth consecutive win. This remarkable feat saw them rise from the bottom of the table to secure a playoff spot, with thrilling matches against top-ranked teams showcasing exceptional batting and bowling performances.
