Amtrak train hits pickup truck in Western New York, claiming three lives​ – Times of India



NEW DELHI: At least three people were killed when an Amtrak train collided with a pickup truck in western New York, north of Buffalo, fire officials said on Saturday.
The truck’s occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene Friday evening in North Tonawanda, as confirmed by the city’s fire chief in a conversation with CNN.
Amtrak stated that there were no injuries among the 21 passengers and crew onboard the train.
Amtrak train 281, en-route from New York to Niagara Falls, struck the vehicle while traveling north, as per a statement from Amtrak.
When the North Tonawanda fire department arrived before 8 pm ET, the three passengers were trapped inside the truck. First responders from neighboring towns also assisted, according to a news release from the department.
According to the Federal Railroad Administration, railroad-highway grade crossing incidents rank as the second-leading cause of rail-related fatalities in the United States, with over 200 deaths occurring annually at such crossings, reported CNN.
