The announcement was made by producer Swargachitra Appachan during a press conference on Thursday. He confirmed that the restored version of ‘Manichitrathazhu’ is slated for a July release, allowing audiences to once again enjoy the timeless tale on the big screen.

Directed by Fazil, ‘Manichitrathazhu’ remains a landmark in Indian cinema, known for its gripping story, powerful performances, and technical brilliance. The film stars Mohanlal as Doctor Sunny, Shobana as Ganga, and Suresh Gopi as Nakulan. Shobana’s portrayal of a woman with dissociative identity disorder earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress.
The producer also shared during the press meet that the re-release of Manichitrathazhu has been meticulously restored to 4K quality, ensuring that every frame retains its original beauty and detail. The sound has also been remixed in Dolby Atmos, providing an immersive audio experience that enhances the film’s haunting atmosphere.
The original movie, renowned for its rich narrative and complex characters, has inspired several remakes in different languages. However, the Malayalam original continues to be celebrated for its superior craftsmanship and storytelling.
The film’s creation was a collaborative effort involving some of the industry’s finest talents. The screenplay was penned by Madhu Muttam, while seasoned directors like Sibi Malayil, Priyadarshan, and Siddique–Lal contributed as second-unit directors. The film was edited by TR Sekhar, with cinematography by Venu, Anandakuttan, and Sunny Joseph. The haunting score, composed by Johnson, and songs tuned by M G Radhakrishnan, remain iconic to this day.
