PATNA: The desire to earn respect from family and society made a 34-year-old man in Bihar take a bizarre route, but his gravy train was derailed by railway police, who uncovered his fake kidnapping plot.
On Monday morning, railway police received a complaint that a newly appointed rural development officer was dragged off a train into an SUV by kidnappers at Khusrupur railway station in Patna, while he was on his way to join the posting in Gaya district. As they mounted a frenzied rescue operation, it turned out that the person had faked his kidnapping.
Deepak Kumar Pathak had earlier falsely boasted to family and friends about clearing the BPSC examination and securing the job, and the kidnapping plot was hatched to wriggle out of the situation without losing face. Or, so he thought.
Amritendu Shekhar Thakur, SP (rail), said they received a complaint from Deepak’s father Ramanand Pathak that his son boarded Purnia-Hatia Kosi Express in the morning, but was dragged off by four unidentified armed miscreants at Khusrupur railway station around 9.30am. “He apparently managed to call his family and inform them that he was kidnapped, before his mobile phone was switched off,” Thakur said. According to the cops, a ransom of Rs 3 lakh was also demanded from his family.
A case was registered and the SP formed a special team headed by a railway police DSP for a rescue operation.
Technical surveillance was mounted, which revealed that the kidnapped person had got down at Bakhtiyarpur railway station at 9 am. “We checked the CCTV cameras installed around the railway station. Nearby hotels and lodges were searched and police found in a visitor book of a hotel that a room was booked by Deepak around 9.30am for three days,” the SP said.
The local police station was contacted and a raid was conducted at the hotel, where Deepak was found. Upon interrogation, he told the police that he had shown the result of his namesake, who had qualified the 67th BPSC examination, to his family and friends as his own. He then planned his fake kidnapping and intended to cite that as the reason for not joining his training.
