NEW DELHI: Major fire on a merchant navy ship off the Karwar coast, which erupted five days ago on July 19 has been extinguished, with efforts ongoing to ensure the vessel remains at sea to mitigate risks to the coastline, according to the Coast Guard.
The vessel, MV Maersk Frankfurt, is currently 13 nautical miles west of New Mangalore and heading towards deeper waters.
The MV Maersk Frankfurt, which was carrying 1,154 containers with dangerous cargo such as benzene and sodium cyanate, caught fire 102 nautical miles off the coast of Goa. The ship was en route from Mundra in Gujarat to Colombo in Sri Lanka when the fire broke out, resulting in the death of one crew member.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said, “The vessel is presently 13 nautical miles west of New Mangalore and heading towards open sea.”
An initial response team, consisting of one Indian and three Filipino members, was deployed to the scene with the aid of the ICG.

In another fire on Navy vessel, INS Brahmaputra was severely damaged and was seen heavily tilting on one side. The fire that broke on July 21 was brought under control but despite all efforts, the ship could not be brought to the upright position.
