NAVI MUMBAI: The Maharashtra crime branch on Tuesday arrested Dawood Shaikh, who allegedly stabbed 20-year-old Yashashri Shinde to death and dumped her body on the roadside in Navi Mumbai’s Uran area.
He was arrested from his hometown Gulbarga in Karnataka.
The police had formed eight teams to launch a manhunt to nab Dawood.
A crime branch officer, privy to the case, Dawood confessed that he killed Yashashri Shinde as she had rejected advances several years ago and suspected that she was in a relationship with another youth.
Yashashri’s missing complaint was lodged by her father late on Thursday. She was found murdered on the isolated road near a petrol pump at Kotnaka in Uran taluka on Friday evening.
Her body was found lying in a pool of blood due to multiple stabbing injuries on her waist and back.
Yashashri was a commerce graduate and was working at a private company as a data entry operator. On Thursday morning, she had left home by informing her parents that she was going to her friend’s house. As she did not return home till late night, her father lodged her missing complaint.
On Friday night, a police officer of the detection branch at Uran police station received a call informing that a girl was lying in a pool of blood on the road at Kotnaka and stray dogs were nibbling her body.
A police team found the girl’s face was disfigured due to nibbling by stray dogs, who had even eaten her shoulder flesh. There were three stab injuries on her waist and back.
Her family members, who had lodged a missing person’s complaint on Thursday, identified the body. Her parents had lodged a molestation case against Dawood Shaikh in 2019. Dawood Shaikh is a bus conductor with Karnataka state road transport agency.
