NEW DELHI: A seven-year-old boy studying in Class III in South Delhi Public School on Friday fell into a manhole that was covered with a cardboard outside the school in Defence Colony.
The boy was being dropped off at school by his father around 8am. His mother and younger sister were accompanying them.
When the boy stepped out of his car, he unknowingly placed his foot on a cardboard sheet which was covering a manhole and, within seconds, he was in the sewer.
Bystanders and the child’s parents immediately sprang into action and managed to rescue the boy from the sewer.
The boy was immediately taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he was given first aid and further treatment.
The child was kept under observation in the trauma centre and was discharged around 8pm.
The father of the child, who works in a bank, said that the cover of the manhole was kept aside on the same spot and a cardboard cover was put on the opening.
In a viral video on social media, the father of the child was seen blaming MCD for the accident.
He raised questions about the audit of manholes in the city and also wanted the authorities to take responsibility for the mishap.
“What would have happened if some elderly person or a woman had fallen in the manhole? Which authority is supposed to be held accountable for this incident?” the child’s father asked.
Police said that so far they have not received any complaint regarding the Defence Colony boy’s case.
The incident has come days after a woman and her son died after falling into a partially built drain in the Ghazipur area.
They were heading towards the weekly market on Wednesday.
