Japan on Friday was hit by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake, NHK reported. Warnings were issued for the Kanagawa prefecture, located south of Tokyo.
On Thursday, Japan’s southern coast was also hit by two strong earthquakes in quick succession. As reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the initial quake measured 6.9 on the magnitude scale.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that no reports of damage had been received following the earthquake, as reported by NHK. He assured the public that the government would do its utmost in managing the crisis situation.
The Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Shizuoka prefecture remained unaffected by the earthquake, according to reports. The government swiftly issued an emergency warning, alerting residents of a strong tremor in the capital city and the prefectures of Kanagawa, Saitama, Yamanashi, and Shizuoka. However, no tsunami alert was issued in connection with the quake.
The earthquake caused buildings in Tokyo to shake, prompting a brief suspension of at least one train line operated by Tokyo Metro. However, service was quickly resumed.
