Keshav, the witness, recounted, “Yesterday I heard some children shouting in the ground after which I came running. By the time I reached, a boy told me that his brother got an electric shock from an iron pole and I saw that the boy had already died. The boy was stuck to the pole for at least 15 minutes. Later, police reached the spot…”
The police reported that they received a PCR call at approximately 1.30 pm on Saturday, informing them that a 13-year-old boy was playing cricket on the Cricket Ground in Kotla Vihar Ph-2 when he went to retrieve the ball and received an electric shock from an iron pole carrying electric wire to a Gaushala located in a corner of the ground.
The boy’s body was swiftly transported to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) hospital by a PCR van. Upon arrival, the hospital authorities pronounced him dead, as stated by the police.
The police have registered an FIR under section 106(1) BNS, and an investigation into the matter has commenced.
Anita Devi, the mother of the victim, has called for strict action to be taken against the gaushala (cowshed) and the Power Department following the tragic incident.
“My son, who was a student of class seven of a government school, went to play cricket with his friends on Saturday. He went near the gaushala to pick the ball. He got an electric shock from a pole carrying electric wire to a cowshed,” Devi said.
“Many small children go to the ground to play cricket and this can happen to anyone. When my son was dying, no one came forward to rescue him. My elder son was shouting there to save his life, but not even a single person asked the gaushala members to turn the power off,” she added further.
In response to the incident, Virendra Sachdeva, the Delhi BJP president, has expressed his condolences and called for an investigation into the matter. Sachdeva stated that this marks the seventh death in Delhi due to the negligence of power companies.
“Such cases have become a case of criminal maintenance negligence of the power discoms. In all the cases of deaths due to electric shock this year, a case of criminal negligence should be registered against the power discoms concerned,” Sachdeva said in a statement, highlighting the need for accountability and action against the responsible power companies.
