NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the opposition parties of orchestrating vandalism at RG Kar College and Hospital in Kolkata.
“The people who vandalised RG Kar Hospital yesterday and created this ruckus are not connected to the student movement of RG Kar Medical College, they are outsiders, I have seen as many videos, I have three videos as I can see, in which some people are holding national flags, they are BJP people, and some are DYFI are holding white and red flags,” she said.
“Yesterday, the police were also attacked…Police were attacked. I would like to congratulate them that they did not lose patience, they did not hurt anyone. Now the case is not in our hands, it is in the hands of CBI, if you have something to say, then tell CBI, we have no objection,” she added.
Meanwhile, in response to the incident, the BJP has demanded the resignation of Mamata Banerjee. The party’s women’s wing announced plans to hold a candlelight rally to Banerjee’s residence in south Kolkata at Kalighat, starting from Hazra crossing, on Friday as a protest.
BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar criticized the state government, alleging a failure in maintaining law and order. He also mentioned that the saffron party would stage a sit-in demonstration near RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Unidentified miscreants entered the premises of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital here shortly after midnight on Thursday and vandalised portions of the medical facility, where the body of a woman doctor was found last week, police said.
The incident took place amid midnight protests by women against the horrific rape-murder of the doctor at the hospital.
A postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata while on duty last week.
The semi-naked body of the 32-year-old woman was found on August 9 morning in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital in the West Bengal capital.
A civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the crime.
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the transfer of the probe into the case from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation
